Dogs have been used by human beings for hunting for thousands of years. Different types of  dogs have been trained for various specialized functions, according to their ability. Pointer dogs help the hunter locate the bird. Tracking collars worn by the dogs are used by hunters as an aid for hunting and for tracing dogs who may have lost their way in the forest.

The different types of dogs are used for hunting are:
1. Hounds – used for locating the prey , they can be further classified as:
a. Sighthounds, whippets – track and locate the prey.
b. Scenthounds like coon hounds – hunt the prey using their sense of smell.
2. Gundogs – used by small game hunters armed with a shotgun.
